How Much Fragrance to Use in Different Skincare Products

One of the most common questions beginners ask is, “How much fragrance should I add?” The answer depends on the type of product you are making. Using too little may result in a weak scent, while using too much can irritate the skin or affect the stability of your product.

Always use cosmetic-grade fragrance oils or essential oils that are suitable for the product you are making.

Recommended Usage Rates

Melt & Pour Soap

2–3% of the total weight
Example:
- 500 g soap base = 10–15 g fragrance

Cold Process Soap

3–5% of the oil weight (depending on the fragrance manufacturer’s maximum recommended usage)
Example:
- 1 kg oils = 30–50 g fragrance

Bath Bombs

1–2%
Example:
- 500 g mixture = 5–10 g fragrance

Bath Salts

0.5–2%
Example:
- 1 kg bath salts = 5–20 g fragrance

Body Lotion & Creams

0.3–1%
Example:
- 500 g lotion = 1.5–5 g fragrance

Body Butter

0.5–1%
Example:
- 500 g body butter = 2.5–5 g fragrance

Body Oil

0.5–2%
Example:
- 100 ml body oil = 0.5–2 ml fragrance

Shower Gel & Body Wash

0.5–1%
Example:
- 1 litre = 5–10 g fragrance

Liquid Hand Soap

0.3–1%
Example:
- 1 litre = 3–10 g fragrance

Shampoo

0.3–1%
Example:
- 500 ml = 1.5–5 g fragrance

Conditioner

0.2–0.5%
Example:
- 500 g = 1–2.5 g fragrance

Lip Balm

Use lip-safe flavour oils only. Follow the supplier’s recommended usage rate. Do not use ordinary fragrance oils unless they are specifically approved for lip products.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are highly concentrated and should always be used within the recommended dermal safety limits. Each essential oil has a different maximum usage level, so always check the supplier’s safety data before formulating.

Tips

Weigh your fragrance using a digital scale for the best accuracy.
Add fragrance during the cool-down phase of emulsions (below 40°C) to help preserve the scent.
Some fragrances may accelerate trace, discolour or affect the texture of your product, so always test a small batch first.
Never exceed the manufacturer’s recommended maximum usage rate.
