A Beginner’s Guide to Making Safe, Stable Skincare Products
Making skincare products is more than simply mixing ingredients together. A good formulation needs the correct ingredients, percentages, processing method, preservation and packaging.
1. Start With a Formula
Always formulate in percentages rather than simply using spoonfuls or cups.
For example, a basic moisturising lotion could contain:
- Distilled water – 70%
- Aloe vera juice – 10%
- Glycerine – 4%
- Emulsifying wax – 5%
- Carrier oil – 8%
- Shea butter – 2%
- Vitamin E – 0.5%
- Preservative – 0.5%
Important: The percentages must add up to 100%.
When making a different batch size, calculate each ingredient from the percentage.
For a 500 g batch:
Ingredient weight = batch size × percentage ÷ 100
2. Sanitise Your Workspace
Before manufacturing:
- Clean and disinfect your work surface.
- Wash and sanitise all utensils, containers and equipment.
- Wear gloves, hair covering and suitable protective clothing.
- Keep pets, food and unnecessary items away from the manufacturing area.
- Allow equipment to dry completely before use.
Good hygiene is essential, especially when working with products containing water.
3. Weigh — Don’t Guess
Use an accurate digital scale.
Measure every ingredient separately according to your formula.
Avoid measuring cosmetic ingredients by teaspoons, tablespoons or handfuls because this can produce inconsistent batches.
4. Separate Your Phases
Many skincare formulations are divided into phases.
Water Phase
- Distilled water
- Hydrosols
- Water-soluble humectants
- Water-soluble additives
Oil Phase
- Carrier oils
- Butters
- Emulsifiers
- Oil-soluble ingredients
Cool-Down Phase
- Preservative
- Fragrance or essential oils
- Heat-sensitive extracts
- Certain active ingredients
Not every product requires three phases, but separating ingredients according to their processing requirements helps produce a more reliable formulation.
5. Heat When Required
For an emulsion such as a lotion, the water and oil phases are generally heated separately according to the requirements of the emulsifier being used.
Once the appropriate temperatures are reached, combine the phases and homogenise or mix thoroughly.
Follow the supplier’s recommended processing temperature for your specific emulsifier.
6. Cool the Product
Continue mixing while the emulsion cools.
Heat-sensitive ingredients should normally be added during the appropriate cool-down stage rather than being exposed to unnecessary heat.
Check the manufacturer’s recommended addition temperature for each ingredient.
7. Check the pH
Products containing water should have their pH checked with a calibrated pH meter.
The correct pH depends on the product and the ingredients being used.
Do not automatically adjust every product to pH 5.5.
For example, facial products, shampoos, cleansers and exfoliating products can have different suitable pH ranges.
If adjustment is required, make small changes using an appropriate diluted acid or alkali solution.
8. Add Preservative Correctly
Any cosmetic product containing water can potentially support microbial growth.
Use a broad-spectrum cosmetic preservative at the supplier’s recommended concentration and within its permitted pH and processing range.
Never assume that vitamin E, essential oils or grapefruit seed extract can replace a proper preservative.
9. Fill and Package
Once the product is ready:
- Use clean, sanitised packaging.
- Minimise unnecessary exposure to air.
- Choose packaging appropriate for the formulation.
- Prefer pumps or airless packaging where appropriate.
- Label the product clearly.
A suitable label should include information such as the product name, net contents, ingredients, batch number and relevant manufacturing/use information.
10. Record Every Batch
Keep a manufacturing record for every batch.

Good records make it much easier to reproduce a successful formula or investigate a problem.

11. Don’t Skip Stability Testing
A product that looks good immediately after manufacturing is not necessarily stable.
Before selling a new formulation, consider:
- Stability testing
- Microbiological testing
- Preservative efficacy/challenge testing where appropriate
- Packaging compatibility
- pH monitoring
- Appearance, colour and odour changes
- Separation or viscosity changes
Testing becomes particularly important when manufacturing products for sale.

Start with simple formulations and learn how each ingredient behaves before developing complex products with multiple actives.
Good skincare manufacturing is about consistency, safety and repeatability — not simply having a long list of ingredients.
