How to Add Mica Colouring to Cold Process Soap

Mica is one of the easiest ways to create beautiful colours in cold process soap. From soft pastels to bright, dramatic shades, mica powders can transform a simple soap recipe into something eye-catching.

But there is a little more to using mica than simply sprinkling it into your soap batter!

Using the correct amount, dispersing the mica properly and adding it at the right stage can make a big difference to the final result.

What Is Mica?

Mica is a naturally occurring mineral that has a layered structure and a beautiful natural shimmer. Cosmetic micas used in soap making are generally coloured and processed specifically for cosmetic applications.

Micas are available in an enormous range of colours, including:

  • White
  • Yellow
  • Orange
  • Pink
  • Red
  • Purple
  • Blue
  • Green
  • Brown
  • Black
  • Gold
  • Silver
  • Shimmer and metallic shades

Some micas are matte, while others have a lovely sparkle or metallic appearance.

Important: Not Every Mica Is Suitable for Soap

Always check that the mica you purchase is suitable for cold process soap and the intended cosmetic application.

A mica designed for candles, crafts, resin or other applications should not automatically be assumed to be suitable for use on the skin.

Always follow the supplier’s recommended usage rate and cosmetic documentation.


How Much Mica Should I Use?

There isn’t one universal percentage that works for every mica.

The strength of the pigment varies considerably from one colour to another. Some colours are extremely concentrated, while others require considerably more powder to achieve a strong shade.

As a general starting point, many soap makers work around:

0.5–1% mica based on the total weight of the oils.

For example, if your recipe contains:

1,000 g oils

a starting point of 0.5% would be:

5 g mica

However, this is only a starting guideline. Always check the manufacturer’s recommended usage rate for the particular mica you are using.

Using too much colourant can result in colour bleeding, staining or an unnecessarily expensive soap.


The Best Way to Add Mica to Cold Process Soap

One of the most important steps is dispersing the mica before adding it to your soap batter.

Adding dry mica directly to the batter can result in tiny clumps of pigment that don’t disperse properly.

Instead, pre-disperse the mica.

Method 1: Disperse Mica in Oil

This is one of my favourite methods for cold process soap.

Step 1 — Weigh Your Mica

Measure the amount of mica required for your recipe.

Use an accurate digital scale rather than measuring by teaspoon.

Step 2 — Add a Small Amount of Liquid Oil

Place the mica into a small mixing container.

Add a small amount of liquid oil and mix thoroughly.

You can use a small amount of one of the liquid oils already present in your soap recipe.

The aim is to create a smooth, lump-free slurry.

Step 3 — Mix Thoroughly

Use a mini whisk, spatula or milk frother to mix the mica and oil.

Keep mixing until there are no obvious dry clumps.

The mixture should look smooth and evenly coloured.

Step 4 — Add to Your Soap Batter

Once your soap batter has reached the appropriate stage for your design, add the dispersed mica.

Mix thoroughly.

You can use a stick blender briefly, or mix by hand depending on your recipe and the effect you are trying to achieve.


Method 2: Disperse Mica in a Small Amount of Soap Batter

Another option is to take a small amount of your prepared soap batter and place it into a separate container.

Add your mica to this small portion and mix thoroughly until completely dispersed.

You can then return the coloured batter to the main batch.

This method is particularly useful when creating:

  • Swirls
  • Layers
  • Two-colour designs
  • Three-colour designs
  • Drop swirls
  • In-the-pot swirls

Don’t Add Mica to the Lye Solution

Mica should generally be incorporated into the soap batter rather than added directly to your sodium hydroxide solution.

Your colourant needs to be dispersed evenly through the finished soap batter.

Remember that your sodium hydroxide solution is a highly caustic mixture. Always follow proper lye-handling procedures and wear appropriate protective equipment when making cold process soap.


How to Create Different Colours

One of the fun things about mica is experimenting with different colour combinations.

You can use individual colours or combine several micas to create your own shades.

For example:

Soft Pink

Use a small amount of pink mica.

Lavender

Combine pink and blue/purple tones carefully.

Peach

Try a small amount of orange with a touch of pink.

Sage Green

Use a muted green and adjust with a tiny amount of yellow or another compatible shade.

Always make small test batches when developing a new colour.


Why Does My Mica Look Different in the Soap?

This is completely normal.

Mica can look very different in the container compared with how it appears in finished cold process soap.

The high-pH soap environment can affect the appearance of some pigments.

Your fragrance can also influence the colour of your soap.

For example, a fragrance containing vanilla can cause soap to turn beige, brown or even very dark brown.

This can completely change the appearance of your mica colours.

If you are creating a brightly coloured soap, always check whether your fragrance is known to cause discoloration.


Why Did My Mica Clump?

There are several possible reasons.

The mica wasn’t dispersed properly

Dry mica can form small balls or clumps when added directly to soap batter.

Solution: Pre-disperse it in oil or a small amount of soap batter.

The mixture wasn’t stirred sufficiently

Pigment needs thorough mixing to distribute evenly.

Solution: Mix the dispersion until completely smooth before adding it to your main batch.

Too much mica was used

A very high pigment concentration can make dispersion more difficult.

Solution: Follow the supplier’s recommended usage rate.


Why Did My Soap Colour Fade?

Some colours can fade over time, particularly when exposed to light.

Storage conditions can also affect colour.

Keep finished soap in a cool, dry place away from prolonged direct sunlight.

Fragrance ingredients and the natural colour of your oils can also affect the final shade.


What About Titanium Dioxide?

Titanium dioxide is a white pigment commonly used to lighten or whiten soap.

It can be useful when you want pastel shades.

For example, adding a small amount of white pigment to a strong pink can create a softer pink.

However, titanium dioxide should also be properly dispersed before being added to your soap.

Always use cosmetic-grade material suitable for your intended application and follow the supplier’s recommended usage rate.


A Simple Mica Test

If you’re unsure how a particular mica will behave, don’t put the entire colour into a large batch.

Make a small test batch first.

Record:

Mica:
Supplier:
Colour:
Usage rate:
Fragrance:
Oil recipe:
Trace:
Final colour:

After the soap has cured, record the final colour.

This creates your own colour reference library and makes future soap batches much easier to reproduce.


Tips for Beautifully Coloured Cold Process Soap

 Always use cosmetic-grade mica suitable for soap making.

 Check the supplier’s recommended usage rate.

 Weigh your mica accurately.

 Pre-disperse mica before adding it to your soap batter.

 Use a small amount of liquid oil for oil dispersion.

 Remember that colours can look different after saponification.

 Check fragrance oils for colour-changing or vanillin content.

 Keep detailed notes of successful colour combinations.

 Test unfamiliar colours before using them in a large batch.

 Store finished soap away from prolonged direct sunlight.


The Fun Part — Experiment!

Colouring cold process soap is part science and part creativity.

Once you understand how your pigments behave, you can start experimenting with different techniques and colour combinations.

Try a simple two-colour swirl first. Then experiment with layers, embeds, drop swirls and multi-coloured designs.

Remember that every oil recipe, fragrance and mica behaves slightly differently.
